Tonight was my first attempt at fresh homemade pasta. How hard could it really be? I don't have a pasta roller or anything...but what the heck. Let's give it a go.
Never one to be outdone (even by myself - I know...it's sick) I also decided to make a bolognese sauce. I went with this recipe from The Pioneer Woman.
Bottom line: pasta fail, bolognese win!
I couldn't get the pasta dough to come together, so I added some olive oil to add some moisture. Still didn't do much, but I let it rest anyway. When I took it out of the bowl - oil slick. Fail.
I sit here drinking some of the wine that didn't go into the sauce and I'm thinking that this is about as perfect a metaphor for life as there is. Sometimes your ideas don't work, sometimes people don't like what you do and say, sometimes you burn the Thanksgiving turkey. But sometimes, you hit a home run. Sometimes you get the promotion, or you throw the most perfect surprise party, or you have five minutes at the end of the day to sit down. This bolognese was a triple home run, despite the fact that I didn't have homemade pasta to eat with it. I ended up making some pasta I had in the pantry and it was still delicious.
With my 26th birthday approaching, I'm thinking over the past year and realizing what a truly amazing opportunity we all have to create our dream life, if we're willing. I am a pretty type-A sort of person, and I think a year ago I may have thrown a little fit over the pasta not working out. I didn't think twice about it today. I managed to also get a load of laundry done. Glass half full, right?
A perfect testament to my changing attitude, I'm not freaking out about my list of 25 things to accomplish in my 25th year not quite being completed by my birthday. Even though I love a checklist, I'm trying to remember that the world truly won't end if I don't get it done. Beating myself up isn't worth it.
If you're willing to keep an open heart and mind, you really can do anything. I'm going to celebrate every day like it's my birthday. I'm going to cook every and any recipe I can get my hands on. I'm going to learn as much about the world I live in as I possibly can learn. I'm going to I'm going to love my friends and family as much as I can. Because tomorrow is a beautiful day.
